What to Do If You Receive a Duplicate Ticket

5 min read

You check your email and find two booking confirmations for the same event. Or you open your ticketing app and see two identical tickets where there should be one. Duplicate tickets happen more often than you might expect, and they can cause confusion about what you actually have, what you owe, and which ticket to present at the door.

Why duplicates happen

Double clicking during checkout

The most common cause of genuine duplicate purchases is clicking the "Buy" or "Confirm" button twice during checkout. If the ticketing platform's system does not have adequate duplicate-click protection, two separate orders can be processed for the same purchase. This is a platform design issue, but it results in two charges to your payment card and two sets of tickets in your account.

Browser or app timeout

If your browser or app appears to freeze during checkout, you might refresh the page or restart the app and go through the checkout again, believing the first attempt failed. In reality, the first transaction may have completed in the background. You end up with two successful orders.

Confirmation email delays

Sometimes the booking is confirmed but the confirmation email is delayed. Worried that the purchase did not go through, you buy again. The original confirmation arrives later, and you discover you now have two bookings.

Platform errors

Occasionally, the ticketing platform's system genuinely processes a single purchase twice due to a technical glitch. This is the platform's fault, and they should resolve it promptly.

Ticket reissue

If an event is rescheduled or a ticket is reissued for any reason, you may receive what appears to be a duplicate ticket. In this case, the new ticket replaces the old one, and only the new ticket will be valid at the venue. The platform should communicate this clearly, but it does not always happen.

How to identify what you actually have

Log into the ticketing platform and check your order history. Count the separate orders for this event. Each order will have a unique booking reference number. If you have two different booking references for the same event, you have been charged twice and have two separate bookings.

If you have one booking reference but received multiple confirmation emails, you likely have one booking and the emails are duplicates. Check your bank statement or payment app to confirm how many charges were processed. One charge means one booking. Two charges mean two bookings.

If the tickets have different QR codes, they are different tickets. If they have identical QR codes, they are the same ticket delivered twice. The QR code is the definitive identifier.

What to do about a genuine double purchase

Contact the ticketing platform's customer support as soon as you notice the duplicate. Explain that you accidentally purchased twice and would like to cancel one of the orders and receive a refund. Have both booking reference numbers ready.

Most platforms will process this refund without difficulty, especially if you contact them promptly. The ease of the refund depends on the platform's refund policy and how far in advance of the event you are. Some platforms charge a cancellation or processing fee, while others refund the full amount.

If the platform's refund policy is restrictive, you may be able to transfer the duplicate ticket to a friend or sell it through the platform's official resale channel. This recovers your money without relying on the platform's refund process.

For purchases made by credit card, you may also be able to request a chargeback through your card issuer if the platform refuses to refund a clear duplicate purchase. Under UK consumer law, you should not be charged twice for a single intended purchase due to a platform's technical failure.

What to do about a reissued ticket

If the duplicate is actually a replacement ticket following a reschedule or reissue, the new ticket supersedes the old one. Use the new ticket and discard the old one. If you are unsure which is the current valid ticket, contact the platform to confirm. They can tell you which booking reference and QR code are active.

Which ticket to use at the venue

If you end up keeping both tickets, whether because you are taking a friend, or because you could not get a refund in time, each ticket will have its own unique QR code and will scan independently at the venue. Use one and give the other to your companion.

If both tickets have the same QR code (which indicates a duplicate delivery rather than a duplicate purchase), only one scan will be accepted. The second scan will be rejected because the code has already been used. In this case, it does not matter which copy you use, just use one and ignore the other.

Preventing duplicates in future

Click the buy button once and wait. Even if the page seems to freeze, resist the urge to click again or refresh. Most platforms show a processing indicator or redirect you to a confirmation page within 30 seconds. If after a full minute nothing has happened, check your email and bank statement before trying again.

After purchasing, check your email for a confirmation. If no confirmation arrives within an hour, check your spam folder and then log into the platform to check your order history. Only attempt to purchase again if you have confirmed that the first attempt genuinely did not go through.

If you do accidentally buy twice, acting quickly gives you the best chance of a straightforward refund. The longer you wait, the closer the event gets, and the harder it becomes to resolve ticketing issues. A quick email to customer support on the same day usually sorts things out within a day or two.
