Your digital ticket exists as data on your phone. If your phone breaks, gets stolen, runs out of battery, or the ticketing app crashes, that data might become inaccessible right when you need it most. Backing up your tickets takes a few minutes and creates redundancy that can save your evening. Here is how to do it properly.
Why backing up matters
Paper tickets existed in the physical world. You could see them, hold them, and put them in a safe place. Digital tickets exist as data, and data can become inaccessible for reasons beyond your control. A software update that breaks the app, a server outage on the ticketing platform, a phone dropped in a puddle, or simply a flat battery, all of these can separate you from your ticket.
A backup is a second (or third) way to access or prove your ticket. It does not need to be complicated, and the five minutes it takes could save you an hour at the box office or missing the event entirely.
Backup method 1: Save to your phone's wallet
If the ticketing platform supports Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, add your ticket there. Wallet passes are stored locally on your device independently of the ticketing app. If the app crashes or cannot connect to the internet, the wallet pass remains accessible.
Wallet passes also survive app uninstalls. If you accidentally delete the ticketing app, your wallet pass is unaffected. This makes the wallet a more resilient storage location than the app alone.
On iPhones, wallet passes can be accessible from the lock screen, which uses significantly less battery than opening an app. If your phone is on its last few percent of battery, accessing a wallet pass gives you the best chance of displaying your ticket before the phone shuts down.
Backup method 2: Screenshot the QR code
Take a screenshot of your ticket's QR code and save it to your photo gallery. For static QR codes (which do not change), this screenshot is functionally equivalent to the original and will scan at the venue.
Organise your ticket screenshots in a dedicated album so you can find them quickly. On iPhone, create an album called "Tickets". On Android, use a folder in your gallery app. Having to scroll through hundreds of photos to find your ticket in the entry queue defeats the purpose of a quick backup.
Be aware that dynamic QR codes that change periodically will not work as screenshots. A screenshot captures one moment, and a dynamic code will have moved on by the time you use it. For dynamic tickets, your backup needs to be a different method.
Backup method 3: Email and cloud storage
Your booking confirmation email is itself a backup. It contains your booking reference, event details, and often a PDF ticket attachment or a link to view your ticket online. Make sure this email is accessible from your phone and from any web browser.
If your ticket was sent as a PDF attachment, download it and save it to a cloud storage service like iCloud, Google Drive, or Dropbox. This means you can access the PDF from any device, including a friend's phone or a tablet, if your own phone is unavailable.
Forward the confirmation email to a trusted person, like a partner or the friend you are attending with. If your phone dies and you need to access your booking reference at the box office, they can pull up the email on their phone.
Backup method 4: Print a copy
For events where a lot is riding on entry, print your ticket. A printed ticket with a barcode or QR code scans identically to a digital one. It requires no battery, no internet connection, and no functioning phone. It is the ultimate low-tech backup.
Print the ticket clearly on A4 paper at normal quality. Keep it flat and dry. A folded, crumpled, or rain-damaged printout may not scan. A clear plastic wallet or envelope keeps it protected.
Backup method 5: Note your booking reference
Write down your booking reference number somewhere other than your phone. On a piece of paper in your wallet, in a note app on a second device, or simply memorise it. If everything else fails, your booking reference combined with photo ID allows the box office to look up your booking and verify your entry.
The booking reference is your ultimate safety net. It proves you bought a ticket and allows the venue to verify your purchase regardless of what has happened to your phone or the ticketing app.
How many backups do you need?
For a regular gig or event, two backups are enough. Save to your wallet and take a screenshot, or keep the confirmation email accessible and print a copy. This covers the most common failure scenarios: app crash, dead battery, and no internet.
For a once-in-a-lifetime event, a sold-out show you have been waiting months for, or an event in a remote location with poor connectivity, go further. Wallet pass, screenshot, cloud-stored PDF, printed copy, and booking reference noted on paper. Five minutes of preparation for absolute peace of mind.
Keep your backups current
If the event is rescheduled, the ticket reissued, or the seat allocation changed, your backups may contain outdated information. When you receive an updated ticket, update your backups too. Delete old screenshots, save new ones, and check that your wallet pass has refreshed. An outdated QR code from a reissued ticket will not scan at the venue.
Backing up digital tickets is not about distrust of technology. It is about acknowledging that technology occasionally fails and having a plan for when it does. The fans who enjoy every event without entry stress are the ones who spend a few minutes on preparation, creating the layers of redundancy that ensure their ticket is always accessible, no matter what happens to their phone.
