About this event
Our acting classes serve as a queer theatre lab, a safe and creative space where LGBTQ+ theatre-makers can come together to:
Hone Acting and Performance Skills: Learn about performance styles and acting techniques.
Explore Through Play: Participate in creative improvisation games and exercises designed to foster self-discovery and collaborative play.
Delve into LGBTQ+ Material: Work with scripts, themes and devise work that reflects LGBTQIA+ people, experiences and themes.
Build a Supportive Network: Make friends and join a nurturing community that supports your artistic and personal growth.
Discover Opportunities: Gain access to Queer Theatre's array of events, such as our Queer Play Reading Club, Queer Variety Night, trips, social events and networking opportunities.
Industry Showcase: We dedicate several months a year to preparing our acting class students to perform in our OutCast showcases of queer actors and writing. We invite friends, loved ones and people from the performing arts industry such as agents and casting directors to see our work and many have received agent representation and professional opportunities as actors and writers.
YOUR ACTING TEACHER; ANDREW KEATES (HE/HIM)
Our classes are facilitated by the esteemed Andrew Keates, Queer Theatre's artistic director and an award-winning theatre director. Andrew's impressive portfolio includes directing critically acclaimed LGBTQ+ plays such as Bent and Passing By by Martin Sherman, As Is by William M. Hoffman, Dark Sublime by Michael Dennis, and the recent European premiere of Steve by Mark Gerrard (to name but a few!). His experience directing in the West End, internationally and working with West End, Hollywood and Broadway actors worldwide, alongside with his years of LGBTQ+ activism and experience of LGBTQ+ issues make these classes a unique sanctuary for growth, learning, challenges and of course, fun.
CLASS DETAILS
When: Mondays - Class starts runs 7pm - 9:30pm. Doors open at 6:30pm. We socialise together until late after class. Finish time sometimes varies depending on the type of work we’re doing.
Where: The Two Brewers, Club Room, 114 Clapham High Street, Lambeth, Greater London, SW4 7UJ
Travel: Conveniently located just a five-minute walk from Clapham Common underground station, ten minutes from Clapham North underground station, and Clapham High Street overground.
Accessibility: Our classes are wheelchair accessible. If you have any specific needs, please reach out so we can accommodate you.
WHAT DO I NEED?
Clothing: Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes that allow you to move easily.
Pencil Case: Bring a notebook, a pen, and a pencil. A pencil sharpener and an eraser may also prove helpful.
Materials: We will provide all materials for each session, such as queer scenes, monologues and other resources.

By purchasing a ticket and attending, you agree to these terms and conditions. Tickets are non-refundable unless the session is cancelled by Queer Theatre (or where required by law). Queer Theatre reserves the right to make reasonable changes to the programme, content, structure, timings, facilitator, and venue arrangements where necessary. Class usually ends around 9:30pm but may run until 10pm depending on the work. Complimentary snacks may be provided but are not guaranteed. You are responsible for checking allergens and for your own dietary requirements. Participation is at your own risk. Please tell the facilitator before the session about any injuries, health conditions, access requirements, or anything that may affect your safe participation. Queer Theatre accepts no liability for loss, theft, or damage to personal property. We reserve the right to refuse admission or remove anyone whose behaviour is disruptive, unsafe, discriminatory, or harassing, or who is intoxicated. By attending you also agree that Queer Theatre may photograph and/or film the session, including your image and voice, and use this content for promotional, marketing, archive, and editorial purposes across all media. There is no opt out. Some sessions may include rehearsal-style work connected to our OutCast Showcase, exploring LGBTQIA+ material and acting techniques. Every session is structured so everyone can participate and learn, regardless of experience.
Refund policy
Tickets are non-refundable, except where the event is cancelled or rescheduled, or as required by law. All ticket sales are final. We do not offer refunds for any reason, including but not limited to illness, travel issues, or change of mind. Tickets are non-transferable and cannot be resold, gifted, or used by anyone other than the original purchaser. If you’re unable to attend, your ticket cannot be refunded or transferred to another person or date. By purchasing a ticket, you agree to these terms.

Who are the classes for?
Queer Theatre’s acting classes are for LGBTQIA+ people who want to act, develop their performance skills and meet other queer creatives. Whether you are completely new to acting, returning after a break or already have professional experience, you are welcome. Everyone is welcome at Queer Theatre.
What happens in a typical class?
The classes work as a queer theatre actors lab, giving us space to learn techniques, play games and make work together, including scripted and devised queer stories. We get to know each other by socialising and introducing ourselves and pronouns, share stories about ourselves, play games, improvise and warmup, learn pro-acting techniques and undertake a performance task, which we share with the group.
Who teaches the class?
Classes are led by Andrew Keates (he/him), Queer Theatre’s artistic director and an award-winning theatre director. His credits include Dessa Rose, Bent, Passing By, As Is, Dark Sublime, Steve, Chinglish, Secret Cinema and has many other credits directing in the West End & internationally.
When are the classes?
Classes take place on Mondays. Doors open at 6:30pm and the class begins at 7pm. We usually finish at 9:30pm, although some sessions may run until 10pm. We often stay and socialise afterwards.
Where are the classes?
The private club room at iconic LGBTQIA+ venue, The Two Brewers, 114 Clapham High Street, Lambeth, London, SW4 7UJ. Afterward we socialise in the main cabaret bar.
What is the nearest station?
The Two Brewers is about five minutes from Clapham Common, ten minutes from Clapham North and ten minutes from Clapham High Street Overground.
What should I wear?
Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes that allow you to move easily and you wouldn't mind wearing if we do work on the floor.
What should I bring?
Bring a notebook, pen, pencil, highlighter. A pencil sharpener and eraser may also be useful. We provide all scenes, monologues and other class materials.
Do I need to prepare anything?
No, but if you're brand new, you're welcome to bring a monologue with you to share your talents with us! Just let Andrew know before the session if you have something and you'd like to perform.
Will I get the chance to perform?
We spend several months each year preparing students for our 3 x OutCast showcases of queer actors and writing. We invite friends, loved ones, agents and casting directors. Past participants have gained representation and professional opportunities and everyone receives a showreel and professional photography.
What else can I do?
We also run the Queer Play Reading Club, Queer Variety Night, Luvvie: the party for queer theatre-makers, theatre trips, social events, networking opportunities , specialist masterclasses, casting/agent meetings and our OutCast showcases of queer actors and writing. And much, much, more!
What if I have an injury, health condition or disability?
Please tell the facilitator before the class about any injuries, health conditions or access requirements that may affect your safe participation. We will always adjust the sessions so everyone feels welcome. You take part at your own risk.
What is Queer Theatre's purpose?
Queer Theatre exists as a safe place for LGBTQIA+ people to come together, regardless of our differences, including politics, religion, background or social causes. Here, we seek what connects us rather than what divides us. While our work may challenge us as artists, our spaces must always foster mutual respect, care, love and support.
