Screening upstairs at The Ship & Mitre pub. Lovely art-deco room, but there are steps to overcome.
About this event
Fried Bananas is a cinema club. We show fried films in Liverpool. No pretension. Just proper juicy cinema and a good pint. . Our first series is Mellow Yellow — three films from the golden age of psychedelic animation, when studios were making adult cartoons that were strange, explicit, politically raw and visually unlike anything before or since. Last Wednesday of the month, June through August 2026. £5 — book to guarantee your spot, or pay on the door, same price. .
film: FRITZ THE CAT (Ralph Bakshi · 1972 · 78 min)
The first animated film in history to receive an X certificate. Fritz is a cat, a student in late 1960s New York. He wants to be radical, get high, sleep around and find meaning — in roughly that order. Ralph Bakshi’s adaptation of Robert Crumb’s underground comics is filthy, funny, politically savage and completely unhinged. It was banned in some places. Crumb hated it so much he killed Fritz off in a comic strip the same year it came out. It still holds up. In fact it might hold up too well.
Content note: strong language, nudity, drug use, violence, racial caricature.
