Screening upstairs at The Ship & Mitre pub. Lovely art-deco room, but there are steps to overcome.
About this event
Fried Bananas is a cinema club. We show fried films in Liverpool. No pretension. Just proper juicy cinema and a good pint. . Our first series is Mellow Yellow — three films from the golden age of psychedelic animation, when studios were making adult cartoons that were strange, explicit, politically raw and visually unlike anything before or since. Last Wednesday of the month, June through August 2026. £5 — book to guarantee your spot, or pay on the door, same price. .
film: ALLEGRO NON TROPPO (Bruno Bozzetto · 1976 · 85 min)
The final film in the Mellow Yellow series — and the most purely enjoyable of the three.
"Allegro Non Troppo" is Bruno Bozzetto’s Italian answer to "Fantasia". Six pieces of classical music. Six animated sequences. A lecherous ageing satyr. A bee whose afternoon gets ruined by a pair of lovers. A starving cat picking through the ruins of a demolished house. And the Boléro sequence — in which the leftover contents of a discarded Coke bottle give rise to the entire history of life on earth.
It even opens with a live-action scene in which a Walt Disney lawyer threatens to sue the director. It is very funny and occasionally very sad and completely its own thing.
The orchestra is made up of old women from a local retirement home. This is not a metaphor. That is literally what happened.
