How Wearable Tech Will Enhance Events

The RFID wristband has become a familiar sight at UK festivals and events. Originally introduced as a replacement for paper tickets, these simple wearable devices have evolved into multi-functional tools that handle entry, cashless payments, and access control. But they may be just the beginning. As wearable technology becomes more sophisticated and more widely adopted, the potential applications at events are expanding rapidly.

The smart wristband evolution

Current event wristbands, while useful, are relatively basic. They typically contain an RFID or NFC chip that stores a unique identifier, allowing the wearer to tap for entry, payment, and access. The next generation of event wearables could do much more.

LED wristbands that light up in synchronisation with music have already been deployed at some concerts and festivals, creating spectacular visual effects that unite the audience in a shared sensory experience. These could evolve into more interactive devices, allowing audiences to participate in the show -- voting on encore songs, triggering visual effects through coordinated movement, or creating collective light patterns that respond to the music in real time.

Health monitoring capabilities could be integrated into event wristbands. Heart rate sensors, body temperature monitors, and hydration indicators could help identify attendees in medical distress before a serious incident occurs. In extreme heat, a wristband that alerts medical teams when a wearer's body temperature rises dangerously could be genuinely life-saving.

Social features are another possibility. Wristbands that allow attendees to connect with friends, share their location within a venue, or even indicate openness to meeting new people could enhance the social dimension of events. A tap between two wristbands could exchange contact information, creating a physical-digital social interaction that feels more natural than swapping phone numbers.

Augmented reality glasses

If augmented reality glasses achieve mainstream adoption -- still a significant "if" -- their potential at events could be transformative. Imagine watching a concert through AR glasses that overlay visual effects synchronised to the music, display lyrics in real time, or show information about the artists on stage. At a festival, AR glasses could provide wayfinding, highlight food options and queues, and even translate foreign-language performances in real time.

For theatre and immersive experiences, AR glasses could add layers of visual storytelling that would be impossible with conventional staging. Characters could appear to interact with digital elements, environments could transform around the audience, and each attendee could have a subtly different visual experience based on their perspective and preferences.

The practical barriers to AR glasses at events are significant. Current devices are expensive, have limited battery life, and are not designed for the kind of extended, active use that events demand. Social acceptance is also uncertain -- some attendees may find it uncomfortable to be surrounded by people wearing recording-capable glasses. These barriers will need to be addressed before AR glasses become commonplace at events.

Smartwatches and fitness trackers

The devices that many people already wear -- smartwatches and fitness trackers -- could also be leveraged for event experiences. Integration between event apps and smartwatches could provide discreet notifications about schedule changes, friend locations, and queue times without requiring attendees to constantly check their phones.

For sporting events, smartwatches could provide real-time statistics, instant replays (on those with video capability), and personalised alerts based on the user's interests. At a cricket match, a smartwatch could vibrate when a wicket falls, even if the wearer is queuing for food and not watching the action.

The data generated by wearable devices at events could also provide valuable insights for organisers. Aggregated, anonymised data on movement patterns, heart rate responses (as a proxy for excitement and engagement), and dwell times in different areas could inform future event design and programming.

Haptic feedback and sensory enhancement

Haptic technology -- devices that create physical sensations through vibrations and pressure -- could add a new dimension to event experiences. Haptic wristbands or vests that translate music into physical vibrations could make concerts more immersive for all attendees and more accessible for deaf and hard of hearing individuals.

Sensory enhancement through wearables could extend to smell and temperature as well, though these applications are further from commercial viability. A wearable device that releases complementary scents during a theatrical performance or adjusts the wearer's perceived temperature during an immersive experience would create multi-sensory experiences that are impossible with current technology.

Privacy and data concerns

The proliferation of wearable technology at events raises significant privacy and data concerns. Devices that track location, monitor health indicators, and record interactions generate substantial amounts of personal data. How this data is collected, stored, used, and protected is a critical question.

Event organisers deploying wearable technology need to be transparent about what data is collected and how it is used. Attendees should have genuine choice about whether to use data-collecting wearables or opt for lower-tech alternatives. Data should be anonymised wherever possible and deleted when no longer needed.

The balance between enhanced experience and personal privacy will be different for every individual. Some attendees will embrace the full capabilities of wearable technology, while others will prefer a more traditional, less surveilled experience. Offering both options, without penalising those who prefer less technology, is the right approach.

A gradual integration

The integration of wearable technology into events will be gradual, driven by consumer adoption of the underlying devices and the development of event-specific applications. The most successful implementations will be those that genuinely enhance the experience without creating complexity or excluding attendees who prefer simpler approaches.

Wearable technology at its best can make events more immersive, more social, more accessible, and more safe. At its worst, it can be gimmicky, intrusive, and exclusionary. The events industry's challenge is to embrace the former while avoiding the latter.
