Event venues are energy-hungry operations. From the moment the doors open to the moment the last light is switched off, venues consume substantial amounts of electricity and, in many cases, gas. Lighting rigs, sound systems, HVAC systems, refrigeration for bars, kitchen equipment, and general building operations all contribute to energy bills that represent a significant proportion of a venue's operating costs.
The scale of the impact
The energy price increases that began in 2022 hit the UK events sector particularly hard. Unlike residential consumers, who benefited from government price caps and support schemes, commercial energy users -- including event venues -- faced the full force of wholesale price increases with more limited protection.
Industry reports from the Music Venue Trust and LIVE highlighted that many grassroots venues saw their energy bills increase by two to three times in a relatively short period. For a small venue already operating on thin margins, an energy bill that jumps from a few thousand pounds per quarter to several times that amount can be the difference between viability and closure.
Even larger venues and arenas felt the impact, though their greater financial reserves and bargaining power provided some buffer. Festivals that rely on diesel generators for power faced similar pressures from fuel cost increases.
Why venues are particularly exposed
Several factors make event venues especially vulnerable to energy price volatility.
Intensity of use. A live music venue running a show uses far more energy per square metre than a typical retail or office space. Professional sound and lighting systems are designed for impact, not efficiency, and they consume substantial power during operation.
Irregular patterns. Unlike businesses with steady, predictable energy consumption, venues have highly variable usage patterns. A venue might use minimal energy on a dark night and then consume heavily during a show. This variability makes it harder to optimise energy contracts and can result in unfavourable tariff structures.
Building age and condition. Many grassroots venues occupy older buildings that were not designed for energy efficiency. Poor insulation, outdated heating systems, and inefficient lighting all contribute to higher consumption than necessary. The capital investment required to improve energy efficiency is often beyond the reach of venues that are already financially stretched.
Limited ability to pass costs on. Unlike some businesses that can simply raise prices to cover increased costs, venues are constrained by what their audience can afford and what the competitive market will bear. Raising ticket prices or drink prices too aggressively risks reducing attendance, which creates its own financial problems.
How venues are adapting
Despite the challenges, venues across the UK have been finding ways to reduce their energy consumption and manage costs more effectively.
LED lighting. The transition from traditional incandescent and halogen stage lighting to LED systems has been one of the most impactful changes. LED fixtures consume a fraction of the energy of their predecessors while generating far less heat, which in turn reduces the need for cooling. Many venues have prioritised this upgrade precisely because of the rapid payback in reduced energy costs.
Energy audits. Organisations including the Music Venue Trust have supported venues in conducting energy audits to identify where consumption can be reduced without affecting the audience experience. Simple measures like improved insulation, timer-controlled heating, and more efficient refrigeration can make a meaningful difference.
Solar installations. Some venues with suitable roof space have invested in solar panels, reducing their dependence on grid electricity. While the upfront cost is significant, grant funding and community energy schemes have made this accessible to a growing number of venues.
Contract management. Venues are becoming more sophisticated about how they procure energy, seeking better tariffs, exploring group purchasing arrangements, and timing contract renewals to take advantage of market conditions.
The festival dimension
For outdoor festivals, energy costs present a different but equally significant challenge. Most festivals rely on temporary power from diesel generators, which are both expensive and environmentally problematic. The cost of fuel for generators can represent a substantial proportion of a festival's operating budget.
The shift towards greener power solutions at festivals -- including battery storage, hybrid generators, solar arrays, and mains grid connections where feasible -- is being driven partly by environmental commitments and partly by the economic case for reducing dependence on diesel. Industry initiatives like the Powerful Thinking campaign have provided guidance and benchmarks for festivals looking to reduce their energy consumption and costs.
The broader implications
Energy costs are not just an operational challenge for individual venues -- they are a structural issue for the events sector as a whole. If energy costs remain elevated, the cumulative effect will be fewer viable venues, higher ticket prices, and a narrower range of events on offer to the public.
This makes it all the more important that venues are supported in managing their other costs effectively. Eliminating unnecessary expenses -- including ticketing platform fees -- becomes a practical priority when every pound of overhead matters. Zero-fee ticketing is a small part of the picture, but for a venue facing a doubled energy bill, removing a few hundred pounds per month in ticketing charges is a tangible contribution to financial survival.
The energy challenge also underscores the need for policy support. Business rate relief, grants for energy efficiency upgrades, and tailored support for the cultural sector are all measures that could help venues weather the current environment without passing unsustainable costs to their audiences.
