What automated lighting actually means
Automated lighting refers to luminaires (the industry term for light fixtures) that can be controlled remotely to change their position, colour, intensity, beam shape, and effects. The two most common types are:
Moving head fixtures
These are the lights you see rotating and tilting on trusses above stages. The head of the fixture moves on two axes (pan and tilt), allowing the beam to be directed anywhere in the room. A single moving head can produce dozens of different effects by combining movement, colour mixing, gobos (metal or glass patterns projected by the beam), prisms, and beam-shaping shutters.

LED panels and strips can be pixel-mapped, meaning each individual LED or small cluster of LEDs can be controlled independently to create video-like effects across a surface.

How the control systems work
Automated lighting is controlled using a protocol called DMX512 (Digital Multiplex), which has been the industry standard since the 1980s. DMX allows a lighting console (the desk the operator uses) to send control signals to up to 512 channels over a single cable. Each fixture uses multiple channels: one for pan, one for tilt, one for each colour, one for intensity, one for gobo selection, and so on.
Modern lighting control has evolved beyond basic DMX. ArtNet and sACN protocols transmit DMX data over standard ethernet networks, allowing thousands of channels to be controlled over a single network cable. Wireless DMX transmitters eliminate cabling entirely for some installations. And lighting consoles have become powerful computers running sophisticated software that can manage thousands of fixtures simultaneously.
Pre-programming and timecoding
One of the most significant capabilities of modern lighting control is the ability to pre-program entire shows and synchronise them to a timecode. The lighting designer creates the show in advance, assigns each effect to a specific point in the music or performance, and the console plays back the cues in perfect sync with the audio timecode.
This is standard practice for touring artists, where the lighting show is designed once and replicated identically at every venue. It also enables small events to achieve high production quality without a skilled operator running the desk in real time. A pre-programmed show on a basic console can deliver impressive results once it is set up and focused.
The cost revolution
The most significant change in recent years is cost. LED moving heads that would have cost £5,000 to £10,000 each a decade ago are now available in reliable, professional-quality versions for under £1,000. LED par cans that produce excellent wash lighting can be purchased for under £100 each. Lighting control software that rivals professional consoles is available for free or at low cost.
This means that a venue or promoter investing £5,000 to £10,000 in lighting equipment can achieve production values that would previously have required ten times that budget.
