The Future of Event Transport: EVs and Beyond

Getting to an event is often the least enjoyable part of the experience. Traffic jams on approach roads, overflowing car parks, packed trains, unreliable buses, and the seemingly inevitable post-event scramble for transport home -- these frustrations are familiar to anyone who regularly attends live events. But the way people travel to events is on the cusp of significant change, driven by the electrification of vehicles, improvements in public transport, and new mobility services.

The electric vehicle transition

The UK's commitment to ending the sale of new petrol and diesel cars means that the vehicle fleet is gradually electrifying. For events, this transition has several implications. The most obvious is environmental: as more attendees arrive in electric vehicles, the carbon footprint of audience travel -- typically the largest single source of emissions for any event -- will decrease.

However, the transition also creates practical challenges. EV charging infrastructure at event venues is currently limited. A venue that can accommodate thousands of cars in its car park may have only a handful of charging points, if any. As the proportion of EVs in the fleet grows, event venues will need to invest in charging infrastructure to avoid becoming inaccessible to an increasing share of their audience.

The power demands of mass EV charging could also be significant. A large event with thousands of EVs all needing to charge simultaneously would place enormous demands on the local electricity grid. Smart charging systems that manage demand, and on-site renewable energy generation, could help address this challenge, but they require planning and investment.

For festival sites and outdoor events in rural locations, the challenges are even greater. Many of these sites have limited electrical infrastructure, and installing the kind of charging capability needed for thousands of vehicles is a substantial undertaking. Creative solutions -- mobile charging units, battery swap stations, or even hydrogen-powered charging -- may be needed.

Public transport improvements

Better public transport to event venues could have a more immediate and significant impact than the EV transition. For many events, public transport is already the most efficient and sustainable option, but service quality and reliability often fall short.

Event-specific transport services -- additional trains, dedicated bus routes, park-and-ride schemes -- can make a big difference when they are available. Some events have negotiated excellent partnerships with transport operators, providing seamless, frequent services that make public transport the obvious choice. Others, particularly those in less accessible locations, struggle to provide adequate public transport options.

The expansion of the UK's rail network, including high-speed services, could improve access to events that are currently difficult to reach by train. Conversely, ongoing reliability issues on the rail network undermine confidence in public transport as a viable option for time-sensitive events.

Bus services, often overlooked in transport planning, could play a larger role. Dedicated event shuttles, operating from key transport hubs to event venues, can be efficient and cost-effective. Some event organisers include shuttle transport in the ticket price, removing the cost and hassle of travel and ensuring that audiences arrive reliably.

Active travel

Cycling and walking to events is the most sustainable option and, for events in urban areas, often the most practical. The expansion of cycling infrastructure in many UK cities has made this more viable, and some events have actively encouraged cycling by providing secure bike parking, partnering with bike-share schemes, and offering incentives to cyclists.

E-bikes, which have seen rapid growth in the UK, extend the viable cycling distance for event travel. An attendee who might not cycle ten miles to a festival on a conventional bike might happily do so on an e-bike. This could make cycling a realistic option for suburban and even some rural events.

The infrastructure needs to support this. Secure cycle parking at events, safe cycling routes to venues, and adequate lighting for post-event travel are all essential. Events that invest in cycling infrastructure can reduce car park pressure, lower emissions, and create a better arrival experience for attendees.

Shared mobility and new services

The growth of ride-hailing services has already changed how some people travel to events, and this trend seems likely to continue. Services like Uber and Bolt offer a convenient alternative to driving and parking, particularly for urban events where parking is limited and expensive.

However, the post-event surge in demand for ride-hailing services often creates long waits and elevated prices -- frustrations that rival or exceed those of traditional transport options. Better coordination between events and ride-hailing operators, including designated pick-up zones and pre-scheduled rides, could improve this experience.

Shared transport models -- car-sharing, minibus services, and group travel arrangements -- could also reduce the number of vehicles travelling to events. Some events have experimented with in-app car-sharing tools that connect attendees travelling from the same area, reducing both costs and emissions.

The organiser's role

Event organisers have a significant role to play in shaping how their audiences travel. Transport planning is increasingly recognised as a core part of event management, not just a logistical afterthought. Clear information about transport options, active promotion of sustainable travel, and investment in transport infrastructure can all influence audience behaviour.

Some events have gone further, implementing car-free or car-restricted policies that require or strongly encourage attendees to use public transport, cycling, or shared travel. While these policies can be controversial, they can also deliver significant benefits in terms of reduced congestion, lower emissions, and a more pleasant arrival experience.

The future of event transport in the UK will be shaped by technology, infrastructure, policy, and audience behaviour. The direction of travel -- towards cleaner, more efficient, and more sustainable options -- is clear. The speed of the transition will depend on how quickly the necessary infrastructure is put in place and how effectively events embrace and promote the alternatives to the private car.
