A typical medium-sized UK festival (10,000-30,000 capacity) generates between 2,000 and 10,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent over a single weekend. To put that in context, the average UK household produces around 6 tonnes of CO2 per year. So a single weekend festival can produce the same emissions as 1,500 households generate in an entire year.
Where do the emissions come from?
The carbon footprint of a festival breaks down into several key areas, and the proportions may surprise you.
Audience travel -- 60-80%
By far the largest contributor to a festival's carbon footprint is how attendees get there. For a rural festival like Glastonbury or Green Man, the majority of attendees drive, often covering significant distances. A single car journey of 200 miles produces roughly 70kg of CO2. Multiply that by tens of thousands of vehicles and the numbers become staggering.
Festivals located near major transport hubs fare better. Events accessible by train or coach see lower per-attendee emissions, though the total still depends heavily on how far people travel. International attendees who fly to UK festivals produce disproportionately high emissions per person.
Energy and power -- 10-20%
Temporary power infrastructure is the second largest contributor. Most outdoor festivals rely on diesel generators, which are inefficient and carbon-intensive. A large festival might burn 50,000-100,000 litres of diesel over a single weekend. That equates to roughly 130-260 tonnes of CO2 just from generators.

What are festivals doing about it?
The UK festival industry is increasingly taking action. A Greener Festival, the international certification body for sustainable events, has seen a steady increase in UK festivals seeking accreditation. Their assessment programme evaluates festivals across twelve key areas including energy, waste, water, and transport.
Vision:2025 brought together over 100 UK festivals and events committed to reaching net zero emissions. While the original 2025 target has proven ambitious, the initiative has driven real progress. Many participating festivals have invested in hybrid power systems, expanded recycling infrastructure, and introduced sustainable transport incentives.
Glastonbury has invested heavily in eliminating single-use plastics and improving waste separation. Shambala Festival has been entirely meat and fish-free since 2016. Green Man Festival in Wales has partnered with renewable energy providers to power its main stages.
The role of measurement
