The Bournemouth International Centre (BIC) is the largest entertainment venue on the south coast outside of Brighton, with its main Windsor Hall holding around 4,000 people. Situated on Exeter Road, just a few minutes' walk from Bournemouth's seafront and town centre, the BIC serves as the region's primary venue for arena-scale touring acts, comedy, and family shows. It is also a major conference venue. While not a purpose-built arena in the modern sense, it is a well-established stop on the UK touring circuit.
Getting to the BIC
By train
Bournemouth station is roughly a 15-minute walk from the BIC, mostly downhill towards the seafront. South Western Railway operates direct services from London Waterloo (around 2 hours), Southampton (around 35 minutes), and Poole (around 10 minutes). The walk into town takes you through the Upper Gardens, which is a pleasant route during daylight hours.
By bus
The BIC is well served by local buses. The Yellow Buses and More Bus (formerly Wilts & Dorset) services run frequently through the town centre, with stops close to the venue. From Bournemouth station, several bus routes head into the town centre and stop near the BIC.
By car
The BIC has its own car park underneath the building, which is very convenient. Spaces are limited on event nights, so arriving early is advisable. The nearby Bath Road car park and town centre multi-storeys are alternatives. Bournemouth is accessible from the A31 and A338, and the BIC is signposted from the town centre. The roads around the seafront area can be busy on summer evenings and during holiday periods.
The venue
The BIC has several spaces, but the Windsor Hall is the main event space used for concerts and entertainment. It is a tiered auditorium rather than a bowl-shaped arena, with stalls-level seating and a large balcony above. The floor can be set up for standing, seated, or cabaret-style layouts depending on the event.
Best seats
For concerts, the centre stalls offer the best lower-level view. The balcony provides an elevated perspective and is more comfortable for those who prefer to sit throughout. The balcony centre seats are considered the premium positions. Because the Windsor Hall is a relatively intimate space, there are not many genuinely bad seats. Even the rear balcony rows offer a clear view.
Food and drink
Inside the BIC, there is a bar and basic refreshments. The real food options are outside. Bournemouth town centre has a wide range of restaurants, from chain options along the main streets to independent places in the Triangle area and along Old Christchurch Road. The seafront, a few minutes' walk from the BIC, has fish and chip shops and casual eateries. For a pre-show meal, the town centre options are your best bet.
Making the most of Bournemouth
If you are travelling to Bournemouth for an event, it is worth considering making a longer trip of it. The beach is one of the best in England, the Lower and Upper Gardens are beautiful for a walk, and the town has a lively bar and restaurant scene. In summer, an afternoon on the beach followed by an evening show is hard to beat.
Practical tips
- The underground car park is handy -- If you are driving, try to arrive early enough to secure a space in the BIC's own car park. It is the most convenient option by far.
- Walk through the gardens -- The route from the station through the Upper Gardens is more pleasant than walking along the roads.
- Check last train times -- Trains back to London from Bournemouth do not run very late. If the show finishes after 22:30, check that you can still get home, or plan to stay overnight.
- It is not a modern arena -- The BIC shows its age in places. But the Windsor Hall is a good performance space and the location is excellent.
- Stay overnight in summer -- Bournemouth hotels can be very affordable midweek, and combining a show with a beach day is one of the best entertainment experiences on the south coast.
