Best Whisky and Gin Tasting Events in the UK

A guide to the best whisky and gin tasting events in the UK, covering festivals, distillery tours, masterclasses, and how to get the most from a tasting.

The UK is one of the world's great spirits-producing nations, and the tasting event scene reflects that heritage. From Scotch whisky festivals in the Highlands to gin masterclasses in London, there are hundreds of events each year where you can sample exceptional spirits, learn from distillers, and deepen your appreciation of what goes into every bottle.

Whisky tasting events and festivals

The Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival

Held annually in the Speyside region of Scotland, this festival is one of the world's premier whisky events. Over several days, distilleries across the region open their doors for tastings, tours, masterclasses, and exclusive bottling events. Speyside is home to more than half of Scotland's malt whisky distilleries, including Glenfiddich, The Macallan, Aberlour, and Balvenie, making it an extraordinary destination for whisky enthusiasts. Individual events are ticketed separately, and popular sessions sell out well in advance.

Feis Ile (Islay Festival of Music and Malt)

Feis Ile is an annual festival on the island of Islay, home to some of Scotland's most famous distilleries including Laphroaig, Ardbeg, Lagavulin, Bowmore, and Bruichladdich. Each distillery hosts its own open day during the festival week, with special bottlings, tastings, and celebrations. The island's tight-knit community, stunning scenery, and world-class whisky make Feis Ile a bucket-list event for serious whisky lovers.

The Whisky Show, London

The Whisky Show is one of the largest whisky tasting events in England. Held in London, it brings together hundreds of distilleries and independent bottlers under one roof. Your ticket includes unlimited tastings from exhibitors, masterclasses, and access to specialist bars. It attracts both newcomers and experienced collectors, with a range of rare and exclusive whiskies available to sample.

Whisky Birmingham and regional shows

Several smaller whisky shows and festivals run across England, bringing quality tasting events to cities outside London. These tend to be more intimate than the London shows, with better access to distillery representatives and a more relaxed atmosphere. Regional whisky clubs also host regular tasting evenings that are worth seeking out.

Gin tasting events and experiences

The UK gin boom has produced a remarkable diversity of producers and, with them, a thriving events scene.

Junipalooza, London

Junipalooza is a gin festival held annually in London, featuring dozens of craft gin distilleries from the UK and beyond. Each stand is manned by the people who actually make the gin, so you can talk directly to distillers about their botanicals, processes, and inspirations. It is an excellent event for discovering new gins and understanding what distinguishes one from another.

Distillery tours and experiences

The growth of craft gin has brought distillery tours to cities across the UK. Some of the most popular include:

  • Beefeater Distillery, London -- One of London's historic gin distilleries, offering tours that cover the history of London gin and include tastings of their range.
  • Edinburgh Gin Distillery -- Based on the West End of Edinburgh, offering tours and a gin-making experience where you create your own bottle with your choice of botanicals.
  • Silent Pool Distillers, Surrey -- Set in the Surrey Hills, Silent Pool runs tours of their copper pot stills and tastings of their botanical-rich gin.
  • Tarquin's Gin, Cornwall -- A farmhouse distillery in north Cornwall producing handcrafted gin. Tours offer an insight into small-batch production in a beautiful rural setting.
  • The Lakes Distillery, Cumbria -- Produces both gin and whisky, with tours and tastings set in a converted Victorian farmstead beside Bassenthwaite Lake.

Gin masterclasses

Many bars and distilleries offer gin masterclasses where you learn about botanicals, distillation methods, and tasting techniques. Some include the chance to blend your own gin, which you take home in a labelled bottle. These work well as gifts, date nights, or group activities, and are widely available across the UK.

Getting the most from a spirits tasting

Whether you are attending a whisky show or a gin masterclass, a few practices will help you get more from the experience:

Pace yourself. Tasting events are not drinking sessions. Use the spittoons provided, particularly at larger events where you might sample dozens of spirits. Nobody will judge you for spitting, and your palate will thank you.

Add water. A few drops of water opens up whisky and can reveal flavours that neat spirit hides. Most tasting events provide water and pipettes for this purpose. For gin, tasting neat first and then with tonic helps you understand how the spirit performs in both contexts.

Take notes. After the fifth or sixth dram, they all start to blur together. A simple note of the name and one or two words about what you liked helps you remember your favourites when you are back in a shop.

Talk to the distillers. At festivals and shows, the people behind the stands are often the actual distillers or brand founders. They are passionate about their products and happy to talk. Ask questions. You will learn far more in a five-minute conversation than from any tasting note on the back of a bottle.

Eat beforehand. Tasting on an empty stomach is a fast track to a wasted afternoon. Most events provide snacks or food stalls, but having a proper meal before you arrive is sensible.

Finding spirits tasting events

Whisky and gin tasting events are listed on Tickts alongside other food and drink events near you. Distillery websites and social media accounts are also good sources for tour availability and special events. Many tastings sell out, particularly those at well-known distilleries and major festivals, so booking in advance is recommended.
